Clockcards & Timecards

Most commonly rectangular pieces of cardboard, clock cards have the working hours and working days of an employees' week printed on them. This makes it possible for accurate records of employee working hours to be collected both for company attendance records and to help company payroll clerk work out wages.

A companies employees would have one clock card each and they would be responsible for cloking-in and clocking-out each day when the start and finish their shift.

Clock Card History

1888, saw the the invention of the first time recording machine. The Rochester Recorder, invented by Daniel M Cooper was the first time keeping machine to use clock cards to record employee working times. Cooper's time recorder used clock cards, much like those used today. The Rochester Recorder printed clocking-in and clocking-out on clock cards which were marked with the hours of a day and days of week.

Later in the early 20th century, others inventors created similar time recorders. These companies then merged in 1911 to form, what is know today as IBM. Being a much larger organisation, IBM was able to spend more time and moeny on research and development. This saw the advancements in time keeping accuaracy, a range of coloured inks to highlight lateness and a mechanism that automatically printed time once the clock card was inserted. Clock cards themselves haven't needed to change much as the working week has stayed largely the same since they were first introduced.
